MDS Students Join Teach NYS for Mission to Albany

On March 16, MDS eighth graders were given the opportunity to attend the Teach NYS Virtual Mission to Albany where they joined 900 students, parents and school administrators to advocate for equitable funding for nonpublic schools.

After getting to know Senator Brad Hoylman and Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal, the students discussed the topics of STEM, COVID safety and school security, and had the privilege of lobbying for more funding in these areas. They asked questions to learn more about how state government works and how the budget is allocated.

The eighth graders valued being part of this delegation, during which they were able to turn their knowledge from the classroom into action and hone their leadership skills in an effort to advocate for these significant programs.

“We really enjoyed learning more about how state government works through real government members,” says Sarah Berger. Adds Matea Frieber, “This was an incredible experience, and we hope to participate in the mission again in high school.”

When the New York State Education Budget is passed, it will be owed in large part to MDS students who took the day to make their voices heard.
