MTA Wrestling Tops North Shore

By Shai Cohen (’14)

On Monday, November 25, the MTA Lions’ Wrestling Team opened up its season with an uplifting victory. With quite a few promising rookies and experienced veterans, the Lions defeated the North Shore Stars 48-27.

First-year wrestler Eli Szafranski (’17) won both of his matches by pin, an impressive feat for a freshman. Shimmy Mandelbaum (’16), a second-year wrestler, displayed his skills on the mat by pinning his opponent. With all of the hard work that Naftali Horowitz (’16) has been putting in, it was no surprise to the team when he won two matches that night. Shai Cohen (’14), the captain of the team, won both of his matches by pin. Another senior and leader of the team, Yehoshua

Szafranski (’14) beat his opponent in a tough match. Michael Amuev (’15), the co-captain of the team and a very aggressive wrestler, dominated his opponent and pinned him very quickly. Lastly, following his fifth-place finish in Wittenberg last year, Yaakov Kurlantzick (’16) started off his season with a solid win against North Shore’s captain. Many other MTA wrestlers did a great job that night, using the new techniques that they have learned and wrestling tough, close matches.

The Lions have high hopes for this season and plan to continue their success at this Sunday’s tournament.

Bruriah Basketball

By Sara Weissman

The Lightning filled its home gym again, this time against Central. In a game brimming with playoff-like energy, Bruriah defeated Central 55-41 in the first meeting ever between the two teams.

It was a fast-paced game and the Lightning used a collaborative effort against a spry and feisty Central. Bruriah took control of the game in the opening minute and didn’t relinquish its lead. With Ally Orgel (sophomore) and Jennifer Gardner (senior) leading Bruriah’s defense, numerous turnovers led to transition baskets. Dani Berlin (sophomore), Nikki Bick (junior) and Daphna Becker (senior) led the scorers. Central made a run late in the game which Bruriah quickly quelled.

Bruriah (2-2) took to the road against Frisch in a thrilling game that came down to the wire. There were lead changes, flying bodies, and fast breaks—non-stop action until the final buzzer. With 1.8 seconds on the clock, Bruriah missed an opportunity to tie the game and Frisch held on for the 37-35 win. Ally Orgel led Bruriah’s offense and Penina Abramov and Tovah Weiskopf led its defense.
