Ramaz Upsets Frisch; Advances to Semis

Ramaz varsity hockey’s incredible run continues! After a dominating win at North Shore, Ramaz travelled to Paramus to face Frisch, the defending champs. Ramaz split the season series vs. Frisch 1-1 with a win at home but a loss at Frisch. Frisch was coming off a loss at DRS, their final game of the season. With Frisch favored to win by almost everyone, Ramaz embraced the role of an underdog coming into Frisch and picking up a hard-fought victory. Ramaz started off the game with two quick goals in the first to take a commanding lead into the first intermission. Frisch came out strong in the second but were left scoreless after two periods. One of the key moments for Ramaz was a 4-2 penalty kill which Ramaz killed off at the start of the third. Frisch would finally score on another power play opportunity, yet Ramaz would hold off Frisch the rest of the way.

Credit is due to 10th grade goalie EJ Singer who played out of his mind. Singer stood strong throughout the game making good saves and firing up the team during intermissions. Of course, captain Eddie Catton who scored the game winning goal and who has been an incredible leader in the locker room must not be overlooked. Additionally, Eitan Linhart had the nicest goal for Ramaz, a snipe off the bar to start off the scoring. And last but not least, the coaching of Jack Horowitz and Rebecca Rothschild has turned Ramaz from a basement team to an elite team. Horowitz took over last season after years of constant first round exits and a JV team who went 0-10 a season before. His experience as a Yeshiva League player has been valuable to the development of the players and his game strategy has proven to be successful. As for Rothschild, she took over for Horowitz midway through the season after he had surgery. Coach Rebecca guided Ramaz to an impressive win vs. Rambam in OT and a hard-thought game vs. TABC on the road, despite it being a loss. Without a doubt, Ramaz’s hockey program is in good hands with them leading the way.

Despite the upset, the season is not over yet. Ramaz will face either Kushner or Rambam in the semis. If Ramaz wins in the semis, they would then advance to the championship. This year has been an incredible year for the Rams. With countless upsets and amazing performances, maybe this year can be the year.
