The Drink Up Jewish Link Sportstar of the Week: Sammy Levine

The Jewish Link and Drink Up would like to recognize Sammy Levine as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The eighth grader at Yeshivat Netivot Montessori was a key member of the Highland Park Owls team that finished the fall season 13-4 with a heartbreaking loss in the fall 12u intercounty league championship game. Sammy batted over.400 on the season moving from SS to CF to solidify the defense. Sammy was virtually unhittable this past season giving up only two runs over his last four pitching appearances. When asked about Sammy, Coach Jeremy Renna told the Jewish Link, “ Sammy is supremely talented and whichever school gets him in the fall will have recruited a key contributor, both academically and for their athletic teams.

Sammy, Yasher koach on a great Owls season! Who is your role model and why?

Chris Long, because during the season that he won the Superbowl with the Eagles, he donated his entire paycheck to charity. I would hope that I would always remember to help others and remember that there are things that are more important than sports.

What is your favorite sport?

I love playing soccer, basketball AND baseball. It is too hard to choose just one.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

I had the game winning penalty kick at a state cup game this season.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Mookie Betts. He is an amazing player and he has a great work ethic. He’s always smiling and I think my game resembles his.

What is your earliest sports memory?

Rovers soccer with Coach Spencer. We started playing with him before we were 3 years old!

What is your favorite sports memory?

We were playing a “championship” game for our rec league. I was on the same team as my brother and Natanel Renna. We won 2-1 and I pitched 3 NO HIT innings and I had scored one of the runs.

What is your weirdest sports memory?

When our coach was out of town for a baseball game and he asked my mother to coach in his absence….which meant that Natanel Renna and I coached the game.

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?

Sleep.

What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?

You get to set examples for others.
