The Drink Up Jewish Link Sportstar of the Week: Simon Rosenfeld

The Jewish Link and Drink Up would like to recognize Simon Rosenfeld as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The 14-year-old freshman at the Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School is the starting goalie for the JV Kushner Cobras hockey team. When asked about Simon, Cobras Coach Nat Druce told The Jewish Link, “Simon has had an incredibly productive start to his JV season, picking up two massive wins against Kushner’s bitter rival, Frisch. He was sharp throughout both, shutting down Frisch’s potent offense at key times which allowed the team to build leads in the first game and remain in the fight long enough to chip away at a 3-1 deficit. Simon has come a long way from his days in middle school, where as a seventh grader started every game, and took a 5-3 record all the way to the championship game, where the Cobras fell to Moriah, 2-1. He is well positioned and aggressive in net, and uses his quick glove to erase all of his opponents chances. Off the court, Simon could be described as a quiet, assertive and an intelligent person. He is involved in many academic clubs and spends time volunteering for Friendship Circle. Simon always has time for others, and his confidence and generosity inspire his teammates for good. Simon is everything you would want in a student athlete. He is selfless, sacrificing his body for the team as the goalie. He is always going out of his way for his teammates. It does not surprise me that he is off to a great start this year and I look forward to seeing what he accomplishes next!”

Simon, congrats on the Cobra’s 2-0 start to the season and for being recognized as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. Who is your role model and why?

My role model is Henrik Lundqvist, former goalie on the Rangers, since he is the one that inspired me to play goalie back in fourth grade. I’ve been playing ever since.

What is your favorite sport?

My favorite sport to play is hockey, specifically, I play as goalie on the JV team at Kushner. My favorite sport to watch is football; I’m a die-hard New York Giants fan.

What is your pregame routine?

I listen to the greatest song of all time “Relaxing Music” on Spotify to clear my head. Once I’m calm I have the privilege of listening to the goal scoring machine, Sam Steiner, blast music on the bus which gets everyone hype for the game.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

My greatest sports accomplishment is probably scoring a goal. We had a big lead and the backup goalie came in so I got to play out of goal and scored my first goal with nine seconds left in the game. Also, I got Top Goalie at Camp Dovid where I won the championship with my top defensemen from Kushner, Koby Eisenberg.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

My favorite athlete is James Orbach otherwise known as James Fourbach after putting up four goals in our last game.

What is your favorite sports memory?

My favorite sports memory is winning my little league baseball championship with zero hits the entire season. I still have the trophy on my desk.

What is your earliest sports memory?

My earliest sports memory is when I was 4 years old, my dad took me to my first New York Giants game

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?

My favorite thing to do when I’m not playing sports is either playing XBOX or hanging out with my friends.

What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?

The best thing about being a Sportstar is the recognition for me and my team. Big shout out to my coach, Nat Druce and the entire Kushner team for encouraging me and pushing me.
