Frisch Cougars Clinch Varsity Hockey Championship

(Frisch Sports) Cougars brought home the varsity floor hockey trophy to Yeshivat Frisch this past Sunday. The game–the first Frisch vs. TABC varsity floor hockey championship–was held at BPY, the Cougars’ old stomping grounds, for the first time in several years.

After a tense two periods, the Cougars roared back, tying up the score with 6:13 left in the third period. With 4:01 left, Frisch scored again, gaining a 4-3 lead. With 2:09 left, Sam Weinberger scored a beautiful goal to put the game away. The final score was 5-3, with Frisch winning the championship and securing their status as the best team in the league. Jakie Feit got two goals, Will Trump one goal, MVP Sam Weinberger two goals and the game also featured a stellar performance in net by Andrew Srulowitz.

“We are so proud of the boys and all their dedication and efforts that resulted in a championship, but we are most proud of their fine character and remarkable midot,” said Frisch Principal Rabbi Eli Ciner. Indeed, several of the student athletes are involved with iShine, and the meaningful connections made there can be seen in how many of the kids were keen to come root for the team. “The kids in iShine look up to these boys as real life superheroes,” said Michal Zahtz, director of iShine Teaneck and a member of the Frisch faculty. A contingent of kids were able to obtain coveted tickets and join the Frisch fans in the crowd.

The varsity hockey championship match concluded a 14-game season that started in September, which saw Frisch with a 11-2-1 regular season record, after which the Cougars won the next three playoffs games. Frisch started off the season with a win against HAFTR. The next game was against SAR, the team that had beaten Frisch in the playoffs two years prior, and Frisch ultimately came out on top. Frisch went on to win another game, then lost to SAR, marking the team’s first loss. They lost to MTA and then to Ramaz in overtime, which would be their last losses of the season. Later that week, Frisch played TABC and won 4-2, then went on to win the rest of their games, including an overtime pre-playoff win against TABC with a beautiful goal by Eli Knapp. In the first round of the playoffs, Frisch played MDY and won 12-1. The next game was against SAR, with Frisch winning 4-3.

Frisch team members this season included: Adir Abramowitz, Eytan Abramowitz, Ethan Alter, Zachary Benkel, Caleb Breda, Aidan Burgida, Jonah Cohen, Aiden Einhorn (co-captain), Jacob Feit, Eitan Geisler, Eli Knapp, Aryeh Levenson, Jared Moskowitz (co-captain), Aharon Neuer, Eli Rothenberg (co-captain), Alex Scharf, Yakir Scharf, Andrew Srulowitz, Ben Srulowitz, Will Trump (co-captain), and Sam Weinberger (co-captain). The team was coached by Yaakov Lisker.

Varsity hockey was not the only trophy Frisch took home on Sunday. The Frisch girls junior varsity basketball team also won their championship against Ma’ayanot, after a 10-game season. Team members included Aliza Baron, Jackie Carter, Sophie Cohen, Eliana Fisher, Atara Forman, Ilana Gilad, Kira Hoffer, Talia Lowe, Eliana Menasha, Galil Neuer, Kayla Nussbaum, Samantha Pruzansky, Lily Wurzburger and Kayla Yahalom.
