The Drink Up Jewish Link Sportstar of the Week: Zachary Nelson

The Jewish Link and Drink Up would like to recognize Zachary Nelson as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The sixth grader at Yeshivat Noam was one of the many talented weapons on the 2022 spring champion Bergen County Flag Football League Bills team. When asked about Zachary, BCFL coach Joey Shatzkes told The Jewish Link, “I have coached Zachary for multiple seasons. He is an excellent player. He is phenomenal on both sides of the ball and made tremendous plays to help us win the championship!! But what was even better was watching him grow into a leader on the field. He learned to keep his composure when things weren’t going our way and was able to channel that to motivate his teammates to continue to play harder and better and not to give up! Kol hakavod!”

Zachary, congrats on the championship and for being recognized as this week’s Sportstar of the Week! Who is your role model and why?

My dad is my role model.

What is your favorite sport?

Football is my favorite sport because I enjoy the fast movement of the plays and I love watching the NFL. I especially love the end of game moments that are big.

What is your pregame routine?

I do not have a pregame routine but I have a post game routine. It is getting a slurpee from 7-11.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

My greatest sports accomplishment is having the winning catch in the semi-finals to send my team to the championship.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

My favorite athlete is Ja Morant because he plays for my favorite basketball team and he is amazing at the game. He does all of these acrobatic plays to help the Grizzlies win.

What is your earliest sports memory?

My earliest sports memory is when I caught my first-ever touchdown pass in kindergarten.

What is the weirdest thing that has happened to you while playing football?

My weirdest sports memory is we were playing football during recess and the ball hit my friends head, bounced up and I caught it and took it for a pick 6.
