Scrubs and Bottling Co. Win Softball Championships

The Harold Gellis, z”l, CBY Softball League finished its season this week with the Scrubs winning the A League championship and the Bottling Co. taking home the B League crown.

After finishing the regular season in first place, the Scrubs, looking to win their second straight championship, took on the second place Knockouts. This was a rematch of the 2019 finals where the Knockouts beat the Scrubs, two games to one. The Scrubs, who took down the Knockouts 16-2 earlier in the season, got out to a quick start in game one with seven runs in the first inning, giving them a lead they would never relinquish. Led by Dan Gindea and his four hits, the Scrubs kept adding runs every inning and won the game 17-7.

Game two was a tighter matchup as the Knockouts’ veteran pitcher Yitz Greenbaum held the Scrubs to just three runs over the first four innings, as the game was tied 3-3. After back-to-back extra base hits by Sralli Schwartz and Amnon Wenger helped get the Scrubs a 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning, the Knockouts bounced right back and scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-5 lead. The game turned in the top of the sixth inning when Gav Feld hit a grand slam that would give the Scrubs the lead they would not give away again, as they held on to win game two by a score of 12-8, securing back-to-back championships.

The whole Scrubs team would like to thank their biggest fan, Simi Friedman, for once again being at every game to cheer for his favorite team.

In the B League finals, the Bottling Co. had a decisive 15-5 victory over a tough Gaters team to sweep the best of three series. The Bottling Co. was led by the Landa twins, Doniel and Ephraim, who each had two home runs and combined for 11 RBI! The Landas are part of the league’s first three generation family and their performance was a great way to honor the memory of their grandfather, Harold Gellis, who was the founder of the Bottling Co. and still an active player in the league when he passed away in 2019. The league has been named in his memory ever since.

The Scrubs and Bottling Co. are thankful to all of the league’s participants and organizers who made this such a great season.
