High school hockey players from the area had an amazing opportunity when the New York Rangers Assist program came to Mackay Ice Rink in Englewood, New Jersey.

Damaged by hurricane Sandy, there was talk that the rink would not be re-opened. The community came together and made its voice heard—especially its youth. New York Rangers Matt Hunwick and Jesper Fast, through the Rangers Assist program, came to help as well.

The evening started off with fitting the kids into their equipment. Bag loads of equipment were supplied by the Rangers organization. Each child was given his or her own Rangers stick customized to his height. The skates were laced up and the kids hit the ice.

Players and coaches from SAR and Frisch, along with the Ranger Assist coaches, were on the ice helping teach the budding hockey players the ways of the game. For most of the kids it was their first time playing hockey, and what an experience to learn from NHL players. The night ended with a charity game between two teams comprised of Englewood firefighters, police officers, residents and Ranger alumni, including Ron Duguay, Ron Greschner and Brian Mullen. The purpose of the event was to grow the sport in the area. Needless to say, the event was a tremendous success!
