Big First Inning Propels Columbia Cardiology to the TBO Senior Girls Championship

Amid fierce chants of “We love free bases!”, “Wee-oo, wee-oo the cops are coming” and “She’s a hefty lefty,” the girls of Columbia Cardiology outlasted Links Residential 6-3 to win the senior girls championship. The evening got off to an emotional start when long time TBO standouts Rebecca “the Duke” Aduculesi and Kayla Forman, both playing in their final game, exchanged lineup cards at home plate.

The Cardiologists came out swinging, plating all six of their runs in the first inning, thanks to timely hits by Riki “top of the order” Piotnica, Orlee “can I pitch” Rosen, Tamar “I once had a triple play in junior girls” Fineberg, Aliza “I’m not a hefty lefty” Warburg, Leora “I wear sweatshirts in the summer” Benson and Meira “I can hit it anytime” Papier. The Duke then took control on the mound, pitching three scoreless innings.

Links Residential began to slowly mount a comeback, but pitcher Aliza “is a friend of mine” Rothberg was in command. Her play, combined with the clutch fielding of shortstop Gabrielle “rip-rip” Green and first baseman Zoey “I can’t believe I didn’t make any errors” Buchsbayew, helped seal the win.

The cardiologists were coached by Josh Buchsbayew, Phillip “Philly” Green and occasional hamburger eater Mike Rosen. According to Green, “Of all my TBO girls championships, this one was by far the sweetest.” Buchsbayew added, “This win was the culmination of a lot of hard work. The girls put in countless hours in practice and played a vigorous regular season schedule to help prepare them for this game.” The team was joined by injured teammate Rachel “I broke my arm playing soccer, no joke” Piotnica.

Though suffering a loss, the Links players and coaches are commended for their play. Seth Forman, Judah Adler and Elliott Adler kept the grill going despite the threat of rain. This will certainly be a season to remember.
