TABC Celebrates Student Research at Annual Scholars Program Evening

On Tuesday evening, TABC proudly hosted its annual Scholars Program Evening, a vibrant celebration of student-driven inquiry and in-depth research. The event showcased the impressive work of sophomore scholars and introduced the research plans of the freshman cohort, reinforcing the school’s deep commitment to empowering students to pursue learning that speaks to their passions.

The evening began with a welcome dinner buffet and warm opening remarks from Rabbi Shlomo Stochel and Rabbi Shaya First, who reflected on the guiding principle of the program: “Ein adam lomeid elah mimakom she’leebo chafetz”—a person learns best when studying material their heart desires. The Scholars Program is built on this foundation, offering students an outlet to explore topics of deep personal interest, often beyond the boundaries of a typical school curriculum.

Through ninth and tenth grades, Scholars are guided in developing research and critical thinking skills. The program also includes exposure to guest lecturers and off-campus learning experiences designed to broaden students’ intellectual horizons. Recent trips have included exploring the mathematics of game play at the Museum of Mathematics, studying 3D printing and its applications in modern dentistry at Brookhaven Labs, learning about solar eclipses through the lens of physics and astronomy, examining the Electoral College and its role in U.S. elections and so much more! These enriching experiences serve as springboards for curiosity, inspiring deeper engagement with the world of ideas.

The highlight of the evening was the series of sophomore presentations, where students shared the results of months of intensive research. The range of interests included topics such as How Language Evolves on Social Media, The Evolution of Modern Orthodoxy: From Rav Hirsch to Contemporary Times, How MLB Stadiums Affect Gameplay and more. Each presentation reflected both rigorous research and genuine personal engagement, embodying the spirit of the program.

Following a short break, attention turned to the freshman cohort, who formally announced their research topics for the coming year. Some of these topics may seem delightfully unconventional—one student even plans to study the science of randomness—but each choice is a reflection of true intellectual curiosity and a desire to learn deeply.

To close the evening, Ms. Cary Riker led the presentation of certificates and gifts to the sophomore scholars, honoring their hard work and accomplishments.

The Scholars Program continues to be a cornerstone of TABC’s educational vision, nurturing the minds and hearts of students as they grow into thoughtful, passionate, and informed young men.
