Teaneck Historical Society Plans Walking Tour

Come learn about the history of WWII fighter planes that crashed over Teaneck.

(Courtesy of Teaneck Historical Society) Take a walk on Sunday, June 8 at 10:30 a.m. to see some of the locations associated with the dramatic crash of two WWII fighter planes over Teaneck on May 24, 1942. Hear the remarkable story: less than six months after Pearl Harbor—and with Nazi U-boats repeatedly sinking ships visible from the beaches of New Jersey—people assumed that our area was under attack. Debris rained down on Teaneck homes, houses were in flames, and more. (Amazingly, everyone survived.)

Prof. Levin, an amateur local historian, will again be leading this walking tour. We’ll talk about what the newspapers reported at the time, interviews conducted this past year with the sons of both pilots, as well as the secret report—classified by the Air Force for 50+ years—about what really happened in the sky that day. Daniel Z. Levin, a member of the Teaneck Historical Society, has been a Teaneck resident since 1998. He has a BA in American History, and is a professor at Rutgers Business School.

You can let us know via email ([email protected]) if you’d like to join, or you can just show up by 10:30 on Sun, June 8 at the Rodda Center at Votee Park (250 Colonial Court). We’ll walk to Julia Street, then double back and walk south along Queen Anne Road until Cherry Lane, after which we return to the Rodda Center.

It’s an unusual local historical story, so it should make for an interesting 90 minutes or so. Feel free to join and/or leave early anywhere along the 1.8-mile route.

Hope to see you on Sunday, June 8 at 10:30 a.m.!

Rain date is Sunday, June 22.
