At Tenafly Chabad Academy from the youngest students to middle schoolers, the entire school was bursting with joy, spirit and pride as they celebrated Yom Yisrael—Israel Day. This special day was dedicated to deepening the connection to our homeland, Eretz Yisrael, and appreciating the zchut (privilege) we have to learn about love, and stand with our beloved Israel.

For the younger students, the day began with a flurry of excitement and creativity. Children made delicious borekas, choosing between savory potato and sweet chocolate fillings, and decorated festive cupcakes in blue and white. Coach Nimi led an energetic “Tzahal Training” session, channeling the bravery and strength of Israeli soldiers through fun, age-appropriate exercises.

In the classroom-turned-dance-floor, DJ Raphi brought the ruach (spirit) with a high-energy Hebrew dance session. Students and morot alike joined in, learning new words, movements and songs—all in Hebrew—fostering language learning in the most joyful way.

The artistic highlight of the day was in “Tzfat,” where Morah Amy guided children in crafting beautiful, framed Hamsa art pieces, each one a personal reminder of our connection to Israel. These keepsakes will soon be hanging proudly in the students’ homes.

Meanwhile, the middle school students experienced a powerful and meaningful Israel Day tailored to their growing minds and hearts. The day opened with a spirited Israel-themed Kahoot competition, testing knowledge of Israeli geography, history and heroes.

In the kitchen, students rolled up their sleeves to prepare hot, fresh borekas, echoing traditions from Israeli kitchens. But perhaps the most moving part of the day was the Israel Art Project. Inspired by Yarden Biba’s butterfly art, students created a stunning giant Magen David from hand-designed butterflies. Within it, 59 yellow butterflies represented the hostages still held in Gaza, encircled by blue and white butterflies symbolizing hope, unity and the strength of Am Yisrael.

To wrap up the day, middle schoolers participated in a joyful Israeli boot camp and sports challenge—a perfect way to end the celebration on a high-energy note, embodying resilience, camaraderie and fun.
