What Is a Donor-Advised Fund?
A donor-advised fund is an account in which donors can manage their charitable giving and enjoy several benefits:
- Receive an Immediate Tax Deduction: Donors receive tax benefits upfront when they fund their Donors’ Fund account and they can decide later which charities to donate to from their account.
- Tax-Free Investment Growth: While deciding which charities to support, donors can invest the funds, allowing their charitable account to grow tax-free.
- Avoidance of Capital Gains Tax: Donors’ Fund account holders who donate non-cash appreciated assets, such as stocks or real estate, can deduct the current fair market value of the contributed asset while also avoiding capital gains taxes.
- Organized Giving: Donors need to keep all donation receipts and ensure that every organization they give to is approved by the IRS as a public charity. With a DAF, recordkeeping is easy. Donors need to keep only the receipts from their contribution to the Donors’ Fund and no longer have to track down dozens of receipts or acknowledgements of individual donations provided by charities.

We Don’t Charge Any Fees to Donors
In addition to not having fund size or grant minimums, we also don’t charge any account fees. Traditional DAFs, on the other hand, charge an annual percentage fee of the total fund amount (usually around 0.6%-1%). Instead, we earn our revenue from the payment processing fees charged to nonprofits that accept our advanced payment methods (Giving Cards and certificates). However, charities don’t have to pay any fees for grants they receive through our donor online disbursement tool.
