The ZPH Group: The Very Best in Mental Health Services

Dr. Michael C. Zarabi, an experienced psychologist with over 20 years of experience, is the founder of the Zarabi Psychological Health Group (The ZPH Group). Alongside a team of three highly experienced clinicians, The ZPH Group provides comprehensive treatment for a wide range of mental and emotional challenges, supporting children, teens and adults on their path to improved well-being. Located in Florham Park, New Jersey appointments can be in person or virtual and new patients can be seen in as little as one to two weeks.

Dr. Zarabi takes pride in the balance of warmth and professionalism his practice offers, and highlights that every clinician at The ZPH Group has a wonderful background. “They are kind, compassionate and possess a unique ability to help their patients in so many different ways. We really make it a point to connect with our patients and make them feel comfortable because it is instrumental to effective patient care.”

The ZPH Group believes in using evidence-based practices including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, which are both considered to be the gold standard for treating anxiety and mood disorders, and other areas such as chronic health. Dr. Zarabi explained. “We strive to give patients the skills and tools they need to live a successful, happy and healthy life.” Working with all age groups, the ZPH therapists provide counseling and guidance to parents and family members whose loved ones are experiencing challenges.

Because all the clinicians at The ZPH Group also have backgrounds within the school system, they are well-versed in helping parents navigate the often complex and overwhelming process of obtaining IEPs, 504 plans, and other accommodations for their children. Furthermore, The ZPH Group offers psycho-educational testing, which can be used to receive accommodations in school and college.

Dr. Zarabi, who specializes in chronic medical conditions and anxiety disorders, said that The ZPH Group prides itself on taking a holistic approach with its patients. The team of clinicians includes an integrative health coach who offers workshops for parents, children and teens on such topics as meditation and media consumption. The ZPH Group also strongly encourages patients to practice self-care between sessions. He explained, “While therapy is very important, there are other things you can do to help yourself, like yoga and meditation. We also like to use technology, including helpful apps, that can assist with stress and relaxation.”

Furthermore, Dr. Zarabi believes that exercise and nutrition are key to a healthy mindset and as such, The ZPH Group collaborates with physicians, dieticians and other outside providers to help patients understand the mind-body connection. “We are here to support you in your journey,” he said.

Often, parents are not sure if and when therapy should be initiated, and frequently realize only in the midst of a crisis that their child needs help. Dr. Zarabi explained how to identify certain signs in children to determine if therapy is warranted. For instance, has their child stopped socializing with his or her peers and has seemed withdrawn for an extended period of time? Are these negative types of behaviors happening in all areas or are they limited to the home or school? “If parents notice a marked difference from how their child was previously behaving, then there could be cause for concern. You can call us to discuss your observations and we can assist you in finding the best path for your child.”

Sometimes, signs can be subtle. Dr. Zarabi suggested that parents not act impulsively and take unnecessary action. If they are nervous and have concerns, Dr. Zarabi encourages parents to call first and have a discussion with one of the group’s clinicians. “There are times when parents can do things before initiating therapy. When parents force a child into treatment, the child may end up resenting the process and/or therapist, which can hinder a future visit when the child may be more willing to begin treatment. We are very clear and honest with our families in terms of what is necessary, so contact us if you have questions or concerns,” said Dr. Zarabi. The ZPH Group does not charge for initial phone calls or emergency calls.

While the debate continues over how much parents should limit their teens’ cell phone usage, Dr. Zarabi feels “phones block you from real-world experiences and while helpful in certain ways, they prevent teens from experiencing life, real-time events and face-to-face interactions.” He also said too much cell phone usage has been shown to heighten anxiety. He is an advocate of limiting phone usage by implementing behavioral interventions within the child’s home environment, and providing helpful literature and other resources.
