What to Do With Your Family on Sukkot Break

Bury the Hatchet Paramus location.

What to do with the kids during the Sukkot break?

It is the age-old question. We want to do appropriate yet fun things with our children during the break. Many of us have children who have a wide range of ages. Well, I have found the answer.

We can escape to themed rooms and throw hatchets. This Jewish-owned company has both the Amazing Escape Room and Bury the Hatchet locations throughout New Jersey (They also have one in Brooklyn and six in Pennsylvania.)

Mensch throwing an axe.

Let me get back to the activity. The Amazing Escape Room is is good for all ages. (Children 6 and under go free.) The family (all private rooms) gathers in a themed room and has 60 minutes to find their way out. The activity is reasonably priced at $35 a person but there are always discounts available during the holiday break. Your family can select the theme that is the most interesting, and you work together to find the answer to the themed room’s puzzle and riddles. You do not have to have any knowledge of the themes in order to find your way “out.” I have done several of these, and they are quite fun. There are escape room locations in Green Brook, Bloomfield, Edison, Freehold, Princeton and Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

Birthday party.

Their other brand is Bury the Hatchet. I love this because it is also private. Their axe-throwing lanes hold up to 12 of us and there is a picnic area where you can bring food and drinks. It is safe as they have staff called “axe masters” who show you how to safely and accurately throw the hatchet or axe at a large target. Once you “stick it” or hit a bullseye, you will be obsessed. The age starts at 10. The cost is similar to the other activity: $30 for a half-hour session or $45 for a two-hour session. If you bring lunch, the two-hour session makes more sense. Several of their locations—Bloomfield, Edison, Freehold, Princeton and Cherry Hill—offer an “Escape and Axes” program: one hour of escape followed by one hour of axe throwing. It is $50 for the two activities.

So what are my kids doing this holiday? Now the secret is out. L’Shana Tova.

Did they escape?
