Winter Animals Are Alive in Moriah Nursery

Winter is here! Moriah nursery kids have been learning about ways animals survive in the cold. They talked about bears beginning to increase their food intake in the summer, and continuing into the fall. They eat and eat and eat some more! All this extra food gives them a thick layer of fat under their fur. This fat layer keeps them warm in the winter. The yeladim did an experiment using ice, water and fat (margarine) to demonstrate how fat does this. Each child put their two hands in the icy water. One hand was put in the water with no covering. The other hand had a “margarine mitten” to wear. The morot explained that margarine is fat. Next, the kids stuck both hands in a bowl of ice water, comparing how they feel. Guess what? The hand wearing the “margarine mitten” stayed warm while the other hand was freezing cold! Fat does keep us warm!
