Women’s Initiative for Jewish Studies (WIJS) at Young Israel of New Rochelle, New York is proud to present Dr. Elena G. Procario-Foley on Tuesday, May 13, at 8:15 p.m. on Zoom. She will be the final speaker of the 2024-25 season.
Procario-Foley’s lecture is entitled “From Deicide to Friendship: 60 Years of Jewish-Catholic Rapprochement.” Her presentation will discuss the origins of the 1965 Vatican II statement Nostra Aetate: Declaration on the Relation of the Church to non-Christian Religions and explore milestones in the development of Catholic-Jewish relations.
Procario-Foley has taught at Iona University in New Rochelle since 1998. She holds the positions of the Brother John G. Driscoll Professor of Jewish-Catholic Studies, professor of religious studies, and director of the core curriculum. Her research and teaching focus on Jewish-Christian studies and systematic theology and consider the revision of Catholic theological views toward Jews and Judaism to be an urgent obligation.
Procario-Foley is the co-editor of three books: “You Say You Want a Revolution?” 1968-2018 in Theological Perspective; “Righting Relations After the Holocaust and Vatican II: Essays in Honor of John Pawlikowski”; and “Frontiers in Catholic Feminist Theology: Shoulder to Shoulder.” She has published a variety of articles including the award-winning “10 Ways to Avoid Inadvertent Antisemitism During Holy Week,” and a chapter in “Stress Test: The Israel-Hamas War and Christian-Jewish Relations.”
