Camp Shalom Bus Crash Sends Campers to Hospital

Old Tappan—A bus crash injured six Camp Shalom campers on June 8 after the bus rear-ended a pick-up truck in Old Tappan. The campers, on their way home to Bergenfield and Teaneck, went to Hackensack University Medical Center and Englewood Hospital and Medical Center with mild injuries.

The driver of the pick-up went with two of the six injured campers to Englewood Hospital with “moderate to serious injuries.”

“As a precautionary measure, a few of the campers were transported to local area hospitals for evaluation,” camp director Rabbi Yehoshua Gold wrote in an e-mail to parents. Thomas Shine, Old Tappan police chief, confirmed that none of the 43 children on board suffered serious injuries.

The bus driver, Angel Valentin, 46, has been suspended until D&M tours receives a police report. He was not injured in the accident according to D&M president Chris Palomba.

After the accident on the corner of Orangeburg Road and Zotti Avenue, the campers, aged 5 to 12, were all triaged on a nearby lawn. These campers were then either picked up by parents or sent home on a different bus.
