I would like to speak my mind with respect to Yom HaShoah. We as a community gather each morning and each day to pray and on this most solemn day in the calendar we do nothing from a prayer perspective or otherwise as a kehila. It pains me to no end. We do not change one iota of our customs in shul that day. How?
My idea is to have the entire kehila on this day each year recite Kaddish (ideally the six Kaddish said daily for the 6 million) in unison. As most people have lost family, if not all, we should all recite Kaddish which is a most powerful message and indication of our co-mourning for those that perished so cruelly. Imagine hearing Kaddish recited by everyone at the same time! I always say that if the Holocaust occurred 1,000 years ago, we would fast for a week!!
Also, everyone should skip breakfast and fast for one meal. Lastly, each Jew should take one name of a lost soul and keep that person in mind all day.
