The Smile Is Natural, the Design Is by ‘Paint Me Colorful’ Face Painting

Paint Me Colorful Face Painting transforms children’s parties into artistic celebrations by painting elaborate designs on each enthusiastic face. Masha Shapiro, company founder, discovered her passion for face painting at the age of four, when she was in a craft store with her mom and saw face paint for kids. “I thought only special people at parties could own face paint,” she recalled. “I was so excited, I got the paint, went home into my mom’s room because it had the biggest mirror and best lighting, closed the door, and painted my entire body blue, inside my mouth and everything. And I have been painting faces ever since.”

Paint Me Colorful provides face painting for children over the age of 3. All ages love it, said Masha, and they’re fascinated by the process. Her designs cater to popular trends including butterflies, tigers, fairies, princesses and superheroes. She has a large kit of color selections including ‘split cakes’ in which she brushes across several bands of colors to add more depth and color to her designs.

At parties, the kids get in line and pick a design from a board on the table. Each design takes about three to four minutes so the line moves quickly. The end result is worth waiting for. “I love to give a kid a mirror and see their giant smile when they see themselves become a princess or superhero,” she said. Her success is due to her ability to make children happy and comfortable. “I’m great with kids and can bring out the shyest ones,” she explained.

Safety is paramount for Masha. She only uses professional, hypoallergenic cosmetic face paint, and puts skin-safe antibacterial brush soap in the rinsing water to ensure that her young clients’ skin stays healthy. After each event, she washes and sanitizes her brushes and cleans all the paints. “I don’t paint faces under 3 years old to avoid potential reactions,” she said.

Masha’s designs are the result of continuous practice. One of her siblings is kind enough to let her experiment. Mostly, Masha practices on paper and sometimes on her arm. She also has a special plastic board with a face where she can create and fine tune new looks. Using a face as a canvas has specific requirements. “You have to know the various focal points of the face and create your entire design based on that,” said Masha. “Linework always has to be directed toward a focal point. When you make lines and twirls, they can’t be random. You also have to know how light hits the face.” Her designs are influenced by her other artistic endeavors. She loves to paint and draw in addition to performing at events.

Although children’s birthday parties, shul events and fundraisers have been the largest part of her bookings, Masha has been fielding increasing requests to do face painting at bat mitzvah parties. The girls love the glamor and glitter, she said, and she has special designs just for them. “My designs for bat mitzvah parties are more ‘adult.’ They are smaller, and focus on the eyes. They’re definitely edgier and cooler. Some of them glow in blacklight, which is a feature at many bat mitzvah parties.”

Paint Me Colorful Face Painting is getting ready to launch a new makeup service for women. Masha will be doing makeup for any simcha including bar/bat mitzvah parties, bridal showers, engagement parties and weddings. She also does colorful and creative makeup for any time you want a special look.
