Teacher’s Corner:
One of my students came to me a week before the test and she said that she is going to fail because she is not good at languages. I shared with her that when you have this attitude it affects subconsciously the way you act and leads to underperformance. If you want to do your best, you should visualize yourself succeeding. Imagine receiving an award for being the best student.
“Impossible,” was her response. That which is possible has been done, that which is impossible has not been done, yet. What would you need to do? How would you feel getting that award? What steps would you need to take to get there?
You spend four hours a night on your social media, right? In the last 300 days that is 1,200 hours. What do you have to show for your time? Your time is valuable. You could work and earn money, you could have become an accomplished piano player if you had practiced for 1,200 hours. Research indicates that it takes 480 hours of study to reach basic fluency in a language. You could learn three new languages in 1,200 hours!
My student looked up at me and asked, “If I study every night for a week, do you think I could do well on the test?” I replied that she would do well on the test and in the class. Decide that doing great on your test will feel better than spending time on your screen, and use that to motivate yourself to focus on your studies.
After she did well on the next test, I asked her, “How many hours did you study for the test?” She replied, “Five hours!”
So I said to her, “You see, all you need to do is to invest the time!”
She replied with a twinkle in her eye, “Just 475 more hours to go and I will be speaking Hebrew; and after that, I think I will take up French!”
