2021’s Top Six Haircut Trends Are a Blast From the Past

Popular cuts from the past are definitely making a strong comeback this season. Runway models, celebrities and fashion magazines are all turning toward previous haircuts, with of course a modernized twist. You’re probably noticing a turn towards more layering, with effortless-looking long fringes. Stylist are reimagining cuts of the past, and at times combining two of these looks into one. This is a great time to take out your older, overly layered sheitals and revamp them with a modern cut and color to create for yourself the trendiest look.

1. Long Layers—Do you want a new look without removing any length? We’ve got the cut just for you! Long layers will give your wig that natural-looking movement that you are looking for. Not only will long layers make your long, heavy wig feel lighter on your head, but this cut allows for easy-to-wear undone waves to hold for longer periods of time, while looking more realistic.

2. Bouncy, Face-Framing Layers—This spring and summer, shorter layers that frame the face, paired with ’60s curtain bangs will be the latest rage. This cut looks great with a blowout to accentuate the layered look. This style can soften the sometimes severe look of a wig, and can make any silk skin-top wig, or lace-top wig look extremely natural and soft.

3. Curtain Bangs—Curtain bangs are all the rage on TikTok and Instagram right now, making them the most requested cut currently. They are perfect for those who want a semi-bang look, without a commitment of a full front bang.

4. Softened, Blunt bangs—There are many benefits to having a full front bang in a wig. Front bangs make the wig look the most natural, as they completely hide the hairline of the wig. Blunt-cut bangs look very trendy when paired with short bobs and ultra-long cuts. Before cutting this on a wig, make sure you are 100% ready for it. A blunt bang in a wig is serious business. Once cut in a wig it will permanently be there and the look cannot be changed.

5. Super-Soft Fringes—The “soft, barely there, seamless bang”—think of a wispy bang look—gives clients some face-framing softness without the commitment of an all-out bang. This cut softens all hairlines on sheitals. I always recommend cutting some of these wisps in a wig, when one wants to pull the wig hairs off ones face, especially when doing a wedding or simcha updo. This cut looks great on all wigs including lace top wigs, and compliments all face shapes. The key to making this look ultra soft, is to cut the wisps starting off of where the wig was parted.

6. The shag—Thanks to Meg Ryan and other celebrities, shaggy layers have been embraced as the “fun look,” giving off an effortless vibe. Long shags, curly shags and shaggy bobs are all currently trending. The texture and movement take any shag haircut to the next level. This is especially true for those with curly or wavy textures that want to accentuate the natural curl pattern of the hair. Those with curly-hair wigs, cut in this style, can simply wash their wig and let it air dry without any styling necessary.

Although the bob/lob reigned supreme for the last few years, it’s now time to spice things up! The shaggy bob is a combination of the shag and the bob. Think feathered layers, low-maintenance texture, with softness and choppy ends. The shaggy bob can be paired with curtain-styled or a softened blunt-cut bangs. When cutting curtain bangs on the shaggy bob/lob, be sure that the stylist will blend them into the face frame.

Although these extremely layered cuts are currently trending, proceed with caution when doing these cuts on your wigs. Once these layers are cut they will not regrow! When purchasing new wigs, I do not recommend over-cutting the wig with so many layers. I usually suggest starting with more subtle layers and looks, which will allow you to cut more should you choose. If you would like to try these looks, I would recommend transforming an older sheital first, to try out one of these styles. If you have a picture in mind, it is best to bring that picture with you to the stylist. A skilled wig cutter will know how to adapt that cut to a wig. Too many thick heavy layers cut into a wig will make the wig look too bushy/wiggy on one’s head. A professional wig cutter will know where to thin and soften the layering so that the wig will suit you best.
