Tallman Park
A great hiking trail that overlooks the Hudson from the lookout but also has a paved walkway parallel to the water. While this may require a bit of bundling up, the calm scenery allows for a nice hike away from it all.

Broadway
During the off-season is the perfect time to see shows! Many shows will be running discounts, and even if that doesn’t work stop by TKTS for great seats. (Go to the Lincoln Center or South Street Seaport location, never Times Square.)

Mountain Creek Skiing
An incredibly enjoyable skiing location not too far from the main Jersey hub. They offer skiing at many different levels as well as some delightful snow tubing, for those who wish for a more relaxing experience.

Thunder Mountain Trap and Skeet
This activity in Ringwood, New Jersey is fun for those who wanted to take a shot at hunting but never cared for the more gruesome side of the sport. With a wonderful staff that will teach you the basics, this is a great activity for some good ole destructive fun.

Vanderbilt Mansion tour (Long Island)
The Vanderbilt Mansion is a super-interesting place to go, especially during the winter when there is beautiful snow and a waterscape. On the tour, you will see many antique objects, including paintings, real diamond jewelry, real mink and shrunken heads (real!) And even a room full of taxidermied sea creatures.
Top 5 – #4
Rockefeller Center
When the weather outside is frightful, but the people and lights are quite delightful! Whether you want to go shopping or ice skating, Rockefeller center is the perfect date-night activity. Perhaps one of my most famous activities there is ice skating, where there is a gorgeous Xmas tree every year. You can bring your own ice skates or you can rent them there.
Top 5 – #3
Cabela’s (I went to the one in Pennsylvania)
Cabela’s is a great pit stop if you are nearby. This is not just a hunting gear or camping equipment store—it also has tunnels that are surrounded by fish tanks where you can walk around and see exotic fish, and they also have taxidermied animals everywhere. From bears to moose, monkeys, birds to giraffes, elephants, hippopotami and more. You will leave Cabela’s wanting to stay there longer, guaranteed.
Top 5 – #2
Corning Glass Factory (Corning, New York)
If you like watching cool glass objects being made, then the Corning Glass factory is perfect for you. On the tour, you will watch a live demonstration of glass being blown, colored and turned into a gorgeous piece of glassware. The gift shop is pretty neat as well.

Ford’s Theatre, Washington, D.C.
This is the theater where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, and it is the perfect place to tour during the winter. The theater is well heated and the tour is self-guided. There are many interesting artifacts such as the gun that John Wilkes Booth used to shoot Lincoln on April 14, 1865, Mary Lincoln’s fancy jewelry and fans, and more. If you choose to go to Ford’s Theatre, I also suggest taking a tour of the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument.

Michaels Craft Store
You can go to Michaels and frame pictures, pick up some good crafts or pick up some scrapbooking materials. They have creative arts and crafts activities for kids, and the activities are also fun for adults. I find it very relaxing.

Fountain Spa
The Fountain Spa is pure bliss from the minute you walk in. You can get a massage, a facial, or chill out in the tranquility room by the water fountain. They are also clean. When you want to unwind and de-stress, that is the place to go.

Barnes & Noble
I generally do not like taking books out of the library because I like to buy them. I find it exciting to go to Barnes & Noble to see what latest books they have on the shelves. Starbucks is available for purchase, and it is very relaxing to read a new book while drinking a delicious cup of coffee.

Turtle Back Zoo
This is a day filled with animals and activities for all ages. It’s a beautiful zoo, not too expensive, and since it’s in West Orange, New Jersey, it’s fairly close for people living in New Jersey and New York.
