Teaneck–Project Ezrah celebrated 13 years of “Neighbors Helping Neighbors in Need” at a gala dinner reception this past motzoei Shabbos. Over 500 guests enjoyed a lovely buffet dinner before gathering in Congregation Keter Torah’s sanctuary for a short program, MC’d by Bennett Schachter, whose remarks focused on the essential need that Project Ezrah serves. There was also a special mention of “Helping Hands,” community members who were recognized by their peers for “extending their hands in help” through chesed and other acts of kindness; each was given a citation from the greater community Project Ezrah serves through its work, as well as recognition of the Township of Teaneck. Rabbi Shalom Baum, Keter Torah’s Morah D’Asra, made the keynote speech of the evening: a tribute to Rabbi Yossie Stern, z”l, Project Ezrah’s founder and first executive director and concluded his heart-felt words by reading a poignant letter from Rabbi Stern’s widow, Rivka Stern. Celebrating the past and looking toward the future was a theme of the evening. Schachter welcomed and introduced Project Ezrah’s new Executive Director, Robert Hoenig. Hoenig thanked the board and staff of Project Ezrah for guiding the organization through the last months. He also placed great emphasis on the HaKarat HaTov Project Ezrah owes to our community’s rabbis, many of whom were present. His words were positive and reassuring: Project Ezrah, its work and its goals were stronger now than ever. While enjoying a lavish dessert buffet, guests lingered to chat with and congratulate Hoenig, confirming their continued support while looking forward to seeing Project Ezrah’s new areas of growth and development.
