We are approaching 600 days since Covid first made its ugly appearance. Where will we be 600 days from now?
To state the obvious, Covid has been politicized. I have received multiple anti-vax “magazines” and numerous robo-calls – none from physicians, although they quote physicians who later deny the attributions. In contrast it seems that most physicians and scientists take Covid seriously.
My personal physician no longer goes to shul due to his assessment of Covid dangers. My good friend of over 40 years now davens only with a make-shift outdoor minyan to protect his dear wife who is a cancer survivor. I am vaccinated and I wear a mask indoors when social distancing is tenuous. I no longer go to indoor restaurants. We no longer invite friends over for Shabbos meals.
Sadly, I knew friends who have died of Covid. I know others who have survived.
In my community some “Jewish” stores insist on masking, others flaunt it with signs by no compliance. Similarly, synagogues in my community range from strict compliance to “who cares.”
This past Shabbos a friend of mine, who is a Rebbe, was not in shul. It turns out his class has been quarantined. It seems that every few weeks yet another class in another school is quarantined. Again, some schools try to adhere to safe guidelines, some schools flaunt them. Perhaps I should also say some individuals adhere to safe guidelines, some flaunt them.
Again, we are approaching 600 days since Covid first made its ugly appearance. Where will we be 600 days from now? How are we going to get out of this deadly loop?
