The Montefiore Codex, the 14th century Tanach from the Iberian Peninsula, is handwritten on parchment in two volumes. Originally part of Sir Moses Montefiore’s collection, where it was cataloged as the first and most important manuscript, the codex’s value lies not only in its age but in its completeness and accuracy, rendering it as a text that served as a model for writing Torah scrolls. Unique features include floral decorations marking the beginnings of chapters, scribes’ notes written in rhyme, and a haftarah list in Yemenite script.

It comes to life with intricate illustrations that depict scenes from Jewish history and tefillot. Particularly striking are the haunting depictions accompanying Keil Malei Rachamim, memorializing the Jewish victims of the Chmielnicki massacres. Another interesting feature: rare Yiddish inscriptions honoring the Austrian Archduchess Maria Josefa.
A large, silver Shabbat hanging lamp from Turin crafted around 1820, showcases the extraordinary artistry characteristic of Italian silversmiths. The 15 oil spouts are arranged in a star shape and detailed floral and leaf motifs adorn all the elements. Suspended by ornate cast chains, the lamp was lit in the center of the home or over the Shabbos table. The item’s prestigious provenance adds another layer to its significance, having passed through Christie’s in 1984 and later included in the Toporowitch Collection.
