NCSY Summer Girls Learning Initiative Kicks Off
Summer Girls Learning Initiative is an opportunity for high school girls who are home for the summer to spend time with other girls their age and have some exciting Torah learning experiences. The program will begin Thursday, June 25, at the Lazy Bean Cafe in Teaneck from 7:15 to 8:15, and will run every Thursday. Classes will be offered by dynamic rebbeim and morot from local yeshivot. The shiur on June 25 will feature Mrs. C.B. Neugroschl. The Summer Girls Learning Initiative is sponsored by NCSY and supported by Bruriah, Ma’ayanot and the Frisch School. Community Collaborative Conference Is This Sunday
On Sunday, June 28, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Congregation Bnai Yeshurun, 641 West Englewood Avenue, there will be a Community Collaborative Conference entitled, “Educating and Inspiring Our Children Together,” sponsored by Yeshivat Hakotel & Israel Schools, in conjunction with Teaneck shuls, schools and organizations. This free Yom Iyun will focus on how to educate and inspire our children. Keynote presenters are Shani Taragin (Senior Lecturer, Midreshet Lindenbaum, SFW, Matan/Rosh BMP, Camp Moshava) and Rabbi Dr. Abraham Twerski, shlit”a (noted rabbi, psychologist and author). At 10 a.m., Beth Aaron member Rabbi Dr. Jay Goldmintz will give a lecture entitled “Helping Our Kids Find Meaning in Tefillah.” Registration is requested but not required; walk-ins are welcome.
The Teaneck Jewish Center Launches New Sephardic Minyan
The Jewish Center of Teaneck will soon implement a Sephardic Minyan that will meet once a month on every Shabbat Mevorchim, the Shabbat before Rosh Chodesh. The Minyan will start July 11 and run through August 8. Allen Ezrapour, member of the Board of Trustees at the Jewish Center of Teaneck, coordinated the minyan, and helped create a joint kiddush for both the Sephardic minyan and regular minyan. The kiddush will begin at 11:45 a.m.

Beth Abraham Summer Groups Commence
Summer groups at Congregation Beth Abraham began last Shabbos, June 20, for children grades nursery to second grade. Nursery, pre-K, and kindergarten are meeting in the basement youth center, 1st and 2nd grade boys in the basement room 406, and 1st and 2nd grade girls in the upstairs room 406. Summer groups are run and organized by Naomi Segelov; Rebecca Farkas will resume running groups in the fall.
Congregation Keter Torah Hosts 4th Annual Children’s Clothing Drive
Keter Torah in Teaneck is hosting its 4th Annual Children’s Clothing Drive during the month of July. The congregation is collecting children’s clothing, shoes and coats (size baby through 14), in very good condition to benefit those in the community for whom shopping can be a hardship. The drop-off dates for clothing are July 5-6 in the Keter Torah ballroom. Volunteers are needed from July 5-17. Appointments can be made to shop at the free clothing drive from July 9-16. Lecture about Tisha B’Av at Rinat Yisrael
Eitan Kastner will be speaking about “The Geopolitics of Tisha B’Av: Using Ancient History to Understand the Destruction of the Temples,” in Congregation Rinat Yisrael on Sunday June 28, at 8 p.m. He teaches world, Jewish and art history at the Frisch School. He holds a BA with honors from Yeshiva University and an MA in religious history from the University of Chicago. He also leads Jewish-themed tours at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Topics to be discussed in the lecture are: how the fall of the Assyrian Empire explains the actions of the Babylonians, how politics in Rome led to the siege and destruction of Jerusalem, and the three-week mourning period commemorating the destruction of the Holy Temples. The A/V lecture will utilize ancient documents and works of art to place the destruction of the Temples in a historical and political context.
Bikur Cholim of Bergen County Seeks Volunteers
Bikur Cholim of Bergen County (BCBC) is a volunteer-driven, not-for-profit organization that provides support, facilities and services to ease the burden of families during trying times.
Volunteers are guided by the rabbanim of the Rabbinical Council of Bergen County. Bikkur Cholim reaches out to community members to bring world-class medical care at Englewood Hospital, Hackensack University Medical Center and Holy Name Medical Center. It is looking for men and women to volunteer and help with meal preparation, driving the elderly or ill to local doctor appointments, visiting people in need or giving respite to a caregiver. Congregation Ahavat Shalom Hosts First Annual Cholent Cookoff
Teaneck’s Congregation Ahavat Shalom is hosting a Cholent Cookoff on Friday July 10. The cholent must be cooked Friday, July 10, at the shul. Ingredients such as meat, kishke, grains, beans will be provided, and others may be requested. Other ingredients must be kosher-certified.
Entries cost $10, and groups can have up to four people. The deadline to sign up is Monday, July 6. On Shabbat, July 11, all are welcome to sample the congregation’s culinary diversity and to judge the winner. Sign up is at http://goo.gl/forms/oqanulHCyR. Space is limited.
MGBL Girls B-Ball Registration Now Open
MGBL is a high-caliber recreational basketball program for girls with a focus of teaching basketball fundamentals to all levels, and the value of working together as a team. There are three divisions—2nd/3rd, 4th/5th and 6th-8th grade. The practices and games take place from September to October, usually on Sundays but possibly Saturday nights and weeknights. Games begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday and will be played into the afternoon/evening. Applications will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis. Maximum players per team are 10 girls, and the cost to join the league is $175, which includes a game jersey. Sponsorship is also available. For more information email [email protected].
Rabbi Yitzchak Etshalom to Speak at Rinat
On Shabbat, June 27, at 7 p.m. the Rinat Yisrael Adult Education program presents Rabbi Yitzchak Etshalom of YULA High school, speaking on the topic of “Listen You Rebels; Moshe’s Sin Revisited.” This lecture will use contextual and textual clues to to take a fresh look and gain a deeper understanding of why Moshe was deprived of his role as the leader of the Jewish people. Rabbi Yitzchak Etshalom has been a dynamic and exciting educator in the Los Angeles community since 1985. He attended Yeshivat Kerem B’Yavneh, Yeshivat Har Etzion and Yeshiva University, and received semicha from the Jerusalem Rabbinate. He is chairman of Bible and Director of Judaic Studies at YULA high schools. Rabbi Etshalom is an accomplished songwriter, storyteller and radio host and has produced recordings of his own original music and stories. His two-volume book, Between the Lines of the Bible, has garnered much critical acclaim. In addition, his Talmud and Tanach podcasts of Daf Yomi and Navi recorded at the Young Israel of Century City have attracted an international following.
Holy Name Hospice Program to Host “End-of-Life Doula” Training Program
On June 29 from 6:30i to 8 p.m., Holy Name Medical Center’s hospice program will host an informational presentation on the topic of “End-of-Life Doula,” given by Henry Fersko-Weiss, who has more than 10 years of experience heading doula volunteer programs. The program will take place in Marian Conference Room 5. An end-of-life doula provides a compassionate presence, knowing support, caring touch and respite for a dying person and his or her family members. Holy Name Hospice is offering a training program for volunteers in End-of-Life Doula in collaboration with Fersko-Weiss. Training will begin July 8 at Holy Name Medical Center. The informational presentation is an opportunity for potential volunteers to learn more about the free training program and to register. Arzei Darom Youth Department’s Upcoming Trip to Tevaland
The Arzei Darom Youth Department will be visiting the Tevaland Therapeutic Petting Farm on Sunday, July 12 (rain date July 19). Tevaland is located in Hillburn, NJ, where visitors can interact with specially trained rescue animals, including ducks, rabbits, horses and goats. The farm will be exclusively open to the Arzei Darom youth department and there will be two reserved separate time slots midday, which will each run for one hour, 20 minutes. Each group is strictly limited to 10 children. The cost is $20 per child; each child may be accompanied by one adult for free. There will be optional activities such as archery, “diamond mining” and goat milking, for an additional $5 per activity per child.
