“This deal offers an opportunity to move in a new direction. We should seize it.” – President Barack Obama, 2015.
What has President Barack Obama done?
Do we have to remind him of the dangerous “neighborhood” where Israel thrives and survives? We would hope that the President would already be aware of that.
We don’t have to repeat the many occasions in the not-so-distant past where Iranians marched in Tehran’s streets yelling “Death to America,” and “Death to Israel.” The marchers were even assembled in anti-American and anti-Israel rallies while the peace talks were happening.
We don’t have to go very far to find quotes from Iranian leaders calling for the annihilation of Israel.
Right now the quote that offers the most clarity comes from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who warned that this is “an historic mistake for the world.”
Indeed, our very own Senator Robert Mendendez (D-NJ) stated that “the deal doesn’t end Iran’s nuclear program; it preserves it. This does not guarantee that Iran will not achieve a nuclear weapon in the future.”
This decision, if allowed to be implemented, will pose an existential threat to Israel. But that would only be the start. Obama won’t be in office 10 years from now, but he could have just signed away the security of the United States.
Obama has said that the pact was based not on trust, but instead on verification.
Does he really believe that this harbor of terror is going to comply with thorough verification of its nuclear sites? We don’t think that it will take 10 years to learn who we are really dealing with here. And we believe that Netanyahu’s warnings, like Winston Churchill’s in late 1930s England about Hitler, need to be seriously heard.
Over the 60-day review period, we urge the Congress to painstakingly examine this dangerous deal.
Maryland Senator Ben Cardin, Jewish and the ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Relations Committee, said “A bad deal is worse than no deal at all,” he said. “That’s the standard we’ll be using.”
Neville Chamberlain would have told us to get a “nice quiet sleep.”
Unless this pact is invalidated, Israel will lose sleep wondering what happened to its ally, the United States. How did Obama bring us to this point?
The pact is a historic event. A sadly historic one.
