Rep. Donald Payne Jr., D-NJ, who is running for reelection in the newly expanded 10th District, is facing a difficult primary challenge from an extreme antagonist to U.S.-Israel relations, Imani Oakley. She says she is eager to join “the Squad” if she is elected, and believes that “Palestine should be given to the Palestinians.” She is opposed to U.S. foreign aid for Israel (including funding for Iron Dome), believes Israel is an apartheid state, and supports the antisemitic boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel.
In contrast, Congressman Payne has consistently voted for foreign aid to Israel (including funding for Iron Dome) and proudly declares that he supports Israel’s right to exist and defend itself. Although the Congressman has not agreed with all issues that NORPAC supports regarding Israel, he has nonetheless been open to conversation and ongoing discussion on these issues. Josh Gottheimer, a pro-Israel Democrat from Bergen County, has called Congressman Payne a “mensch” to whom he feels close and whom he strongly endorses.
For all of the above reasons, NORPAC is formally endorsing Donald Payne Jr. for reelection to Congress. Most importantly, registered Democrats and independent voters who live in New Jersey’s newly redrawn 10th District are urged to vote on June 7 in the Democratic primary. Since the 10th District is overwhelmingly Democratic, it is assumed that the winner of the primary will win the general election.
In addition, the Payne campaign is short on funds in this election. Anyone interested in contributing to his campaign is requested to write a check to NORPAC, designating that the funds are intended for donation to Rep. Donald Payne’s campaign, or call Avi at (201) 788-5133 to discuss another method of payment. If you are able to make phone calls or other outreach activities in advance or on the June 7 primary day, please notify [email protected].
This is a critical moment for the U.S.-Israel relationship and all those who want to see a secure Israel in the future. We must make an impact by voting in the primary and showing our support for Congressman Payne at this time.
