As part of their introduction to their unit on immigration, TABC’s juniors became time travelers last Monday as they visited New York’s Lower East Side. The day began with a tour around and inside the Tenement Museum. The students got to see and hear about what life was like in 1902 for Harry and Jenny Levine, immigrants from Russia, and their children. The tiny apartment, which also served as a factory workspace for the Levines, was filled with artifacts and original documents from that time period. The next stop was the Eldridge Street Synagogue, a magnificent synagogue and national historic landmark in Chinatown in lower Manhattan. It was built in 1887, and is one of the first synagogues erected in the United States by Eastern European Jews. The day concluded with a stop at the famous Pickle Guys, where the boys feasted on assorted pickle delicacies. After that, it was back on the buses to “travel back” to TABC, 2022.
