In conjunction with our lower school social-emotional unit on resilience, the fifth grade read the book, “Rules,” by Cynthia Lord. The three main characters each must be resilient in order to overcome obstacles in their lives. The students kept a resilience journal and recorded each time a character showed resilience in the novel. The examples were discussed during reading circles where the students evaluated each circumstance and how the character grew as a result of their perseverance. At the school wide assembly, each class will present a poster of one of the main characters and give examples of how the character demonstrated resilience in the novel. The fifth graders recognize the value of being able to use flexibility and determination to find alternate solutions when they encounter difficulties.
