The JKHA second grade recently began a new writing unit about personal narratives. Personal narratives are stories written by students about an event or situation that they personally experienced. Each of the students selected five writing themes and, through classroom discussions, learned which of their themes was the most exciting and interesting to write about. After structuring their thoughts and recording their ideas in a graphic organizer, students wrote their rough drafts, making sure to include a beginning, middle and end (BME) to their stories. The students were then responsible to edit their own work, with the guidance of a teacher-created rubric and checklist, which allowed for student reflection on their writing. The students look forward to completing the final product soon.
