The Young Israel of Fort Lee will host a special Lunch and Learn on Wednesday, December 2, at noon. Staten Island artist Caryl Herzfeld will unveil and discuss each of her recent sculptures included in “Chesed,” 10 scenes that each reveal what life is like in the Jewish community. The sculptures were all created with recycled paper and other recyclables.

In “Chesed in 3-D,” Herzfeld pays homage to her community which, over a half century, established self-help groups as the need arose, informal groups, institutions and organizations that embody “chesed” (acts of kindness).

The universal appeal of this work is that its scenes accurately mirror what is found in most Jewish communities. Each piece represents an aspect of Jewish community life, and Herzfeld will acquaint attendees with the story associated with each.

This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and is administered by Staten Island Arts.

Herzfeld’s work has been previously shown in the Staten Island Museum.

Artist Caryl Herzfeld graduated City College Phi Beta Kappa, received a fellowship from Columbia University, and attended the Art Students League, Parsons, and the School of Visual Arts. Herzfeld has been called upon by communities to use her art for the beautification of synagogues and institutions. Those projects have included etched and stained glass windows and doors as well as paintings and illustrations using oil, watercolor or acrylic paints. The scope of her work includes book illustrations, presentation certificates, aliyah posters, ketubot, and the like.
