The Humble Toast SportStar of the Week: Shimmy Stein

The Jewish Link and The Humble Toast would like to recognize Shimmy Stein as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. Stein, a proud graduate of the Rabbi Jacob Joseph School (class of 69) has a storied athletic career. When we asked some of his grandchildren what the best thing about having a Sportstar Pops, we received the following:

“He doesn’t know anyone’s name so he calls everyone ‘skippy.’” -Azarya, age 9

“He always gives me candy and helps me stop making trouble.”-Roey, age 8

“I love Pops!”-Amalya, age 5

“He’s the best!” -Lielle, age 6

Shimmy, Mazel tov on being recognized as this week’s Sportstar of the Week! Who is your role model?

My role model is Dovid Lisker restaurateur/caterer extraordinaire.

What is your favorite sport?

My favorite sport is pickleball; less running than tennis.

Who is your favorite athlete?

Joey Chestnut—world hot dog eating record holder, 76 in 12 minutes.

What is your pregame routine?

A nap and a danish.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

Can’t choose between this article and finishing a sumo burger IYKYK.

What is your earliest sports memory?

Seeing Sandy Koufax pitch against the Mets in the polo grounds with my dad.

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?

Playing with my grandchildren, going to doctors and taking naps.

What is your favorite sports memory?

Being a vendor at Knicks games.

What is your strangest sports memory?

Getting escorted out of Douglaston Pitch & Putt for misbehaving.

What is the best thing about being a Sporstar?

My many fans.
