Bruriah freshmen, sophomores and juniors celebrated Elective Day last week as they began to customize their class selections for their sophomore, junior and senior years. Bruriah offers over 75 electives which span the disciplines, with an array of limudei kodesh courses such as Jewish Medical Ethics, Chassidus and Relationships in Tanach, and a myriad of general studies options like Public Speaking, Food Sciences, EMT and Forensic Science. Among the offerings are numerous AP and college level courses including AP Chemistry, AP Art, AP Calculus and AP U.S. Government, enabling students to build towards their higher educational pursuits. Electives also feature various topics in fine arts as well as options geared towards building future careers, like law, architecture and occupational therapy.

During Elective Day, teachers of each of the elective courses gave the students an overview of their classes, aiding students in the decision making process. After the introductory session, students have the opportunity to meet with Bruriah administrators and college guidance counselors to determine which electives might be the best fit for them.

“Elective planning gives students the opportunity for academic choice and voice,” explained Bruriah Assistant Principal Debbie Bornstein. “Students are able to express what they would like to study and see how they can apply it to their futures.” Accordingly, students are given space to share elective options they would like to see in addition to those already offered. Joyful learning is a hallmark of Bruriah’s stellar educational experience, and providing the students with academic choice and empowering them to make educational decisions creates an enriching and stimulating learning environment.
