Q&A With Dovid Pearlman: A Young Jewish Singing Sensation

Dovid Pearlman is a rising star in the Jewish music industry and a worldwide sensation. With a deep-rooted passion for music, he began performing at a very young age. He comes from a family with a rich musical heritage: His grandfather was a chazan and his father sang in an a cappella group called the Shabbatons. Pearlman’s involvement with the Miami Boys Choir from ages 8 to 14 helped to cultivate his skills as a musician and performer. Since then he has performed all over the globe, singing at bar mitzvahs, weddings and concerts, showcasing his unique blend of traditional Jewish themes with modern elements.

Dovid, how did your experience in the Miami Boys Choir impact your music career? Did you ever imagine that they would go viral on TikTok?

Starting out in the Miami Boys Choir was integral in building my stage presence. It gave me valuable skills when starting out as a musician. I was definitely surprised to see the tremendously positive response the world had to MBC on TikTok. I think it’s a huge Kiddush Hashem.

Your music is enjoyed by people from all over with different backgrounds. How do you succeed in bringing people together with your songs, and what message do you hope to convey through your music by doing this?

To make my music as special and unique as possible, I combine traditional Jewish lyrics and ideas with modern elements. I believe that keeps my music relatable for today’s generation. I hope that through my music I can help bring people together from all different backgrounds.

You have performed at dozens of concerts and events. Do you have any memorable performances, memories, or experiences that stand out to you?

One of my most memorable performances was in Los Angeles at Citywalk on Chanukah. It was thrilling to sing for a packed outdoor plaza with one of my role models, Yaakov Shwekey. We sang and danced with an electric crowd despite the rain. Definitely an unforgettable experience.

You have written many songs and done many collaborations with other artists. Do you have a favorite song or collaboration?

My favorite collaboration was with my father and cousin on a song called “Hamalach,” released on my album last year. It was an extremely meaningful experience for my family and me while recording a song that had been composed by my uncle of blessed memory, Zavel Pearlman, zt”l.

You recently released a new single, “Greatest Gift.” Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the single and what makes it unique? Do you have any other upcoming projects or releases in the works?

At the moment, I am constantly writing new music and am waiting to have a number of songs finished before releasing them. I recently started a new video series called “Music for the Soul,” which is a deep dive into Jewish music and its goal is to help connect others and appreciate Jewish music, to be inspired and have a deeper connection with Hashem. My most recent release, called “Greatest Gift,” was inspired by my wish to create a fun song with a holiday vibe. I have always wanted to create Chanukah music, so when the opportunity presented itself I was glad to record a fun sing-along with a really sweet music video featuring my family.

Being so young and well known in the Jewish music industry, do you have any events over Pesach?

Yes I do! There’s a free outdoor family festival I’ll be singing at in Flatbush on Monday, run by COJO. Definitely going to be a fun experience for the whole family. Over the second days and Chol Hamoed Pesach, I will be leading davening in Seattle.

I’m sure Seattle is looking forward to having you. Do you have any final message to the readers of The Jewish Link?

A: Of course. My message to the readers is that anyone who has a talent or ability should make good use of it and make a positive impact on the world by pursuing it. Hashem gave every single person their own unique abilities to share with the world. Find out what you can do to make a difference, and help bring Moshiach one step closer by inspiring those around you, and making the world a better place. You may even inspire yourself along the way, to be the best person you can be.
