MFJC students support Ukrainian humanitarian efforts.

(Courtesy of MFJC) The Jewish holiday of Purim that falls this year in early March, reinforces the idea of survival and overcoming obstacles. It reinforces how great accomplishments can be achieved when a few people care enough to voice concern and take action to reverse what looks to be a fait accompli. While the Purim story took place centuries ago in Persia, the same obstacles to Jewish survival exist today.

The Mount Freedom Jewish Center (MFJC), under the direction of Rabbi Menashe East in Randolph, New Jersey, has taken a modern spin to this holiday by espousing concern for others, especially in times of need. “I am very proud of the students and families in our Hebrew school for taking this mitzvah a step further by baking hamantaschen and selling them to the community.” The funds raised by this bake sale were sent to an organization that gives aid to the Ukrainian people during their hardship, as they fight for survival during the ongoing war.

This baking project is one example of how the students engage in projects within and among the community. Just last month MFJC students took part in a clothing drive to give much needed warm clothes and food to homeless and impoverished people in Newark, New Jersey. “Through experience, habits are formed. How our students learn to care for others by doing a fun activity that gets them engaged with one another, their community, and with others who are less fortunate—both near and far—is something valuable to us all and gives us hope for the future,” noted Rabbi East.

MFJC has been a fixture on Sussex Turnpike in the town of Randolph in New Jersey, and is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year. Children’s programs, women’s study groups, and traditional prayer services are offered; all are welcome regardless of background or heritage.
