RKYHS and the JKHA seventh and eighth grades were visited by David Bendory a self-described “Jewgler”—a Jewish staff member at Google—as part of Computer Science Week. Rabbi Bendory, a software engineer at Google, provided students with a first-hand lesson on software engineering. He offered examples of how a computer “thinks” and gave a glimpse of what is necessary on the back end when you perform a search in Google. In conjunction with the Hour of Code, Rabbi Bendory introduced the students to the Hour of Code website, http://www.code.org/learn. Students then got a taste of coding by creating their own video games.
Rabbi Bendory also shared with the students stories of the creative atmosphere at Google, ranging from the slide he uses when he needs to get downstairs in a hurry, to the bowling alley when he needs to have fun.
The Kushner schools took great interest in Bendory’s story as they continue to expand their first-rate technology curriculum.
