Ma’ayanot junior varsity soccer played their first game this week against Flatbush. The young team with only 3 sophomores proved to be ready for Flatbush’s talented goalie. The first period started evenly. Freshman, Danit Forman had a shot assisted by fellow freshman Noa Berkowitz. Sophomore, Kate Weinberg had several strong saves in goal.
In the second period Flatbush scored. In response, Ma’ayanot freshman Yael Bruk scored an unassisted goal that brought the Rapids up to a modest 2-1 before the half. Freshman defender, Penina Krischer was a force in the back that prevented Flatbush from getting clear shots on goal. Her persistent and intense style of play helped protect the team and keep the ball in Rapids possession.
The Rapids might have gotten their feet wet in the first half, but by the second half they were ready to dive in (pun intended). Noa Berkowitz knocked in four goals this period alone, one with the help of Forman. Berkowitz’s continuous pursuit of points for the Rapids helped the team breathe a little easier. In the third period Flatbush scored as well.
By the fourth quarter, the score was 6-2. They continued to put the pressure on their opponent. Although Flatbush was able to score a third time, the game ended with a 6-3 win for Ma’ayanot.
