The Humble Toast Sportstar Of the Week: Tory Doft

The Jewish Link and The Humble Toast would like to recognize Tory Doft as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The recent graduate of the Ramaz middle school was a major force on the YMSSA champions Ramaz girls hockey team. When asked about Tory, Ramaz coach and Athletic Director Brian Kaplan told The Jewish Link, “Tory Doft, is an exceptional student who excels both as a leader and a hard-working student both on and off the court. With a natural ability to motivate others, Tory effortlessly takes charge and guides their team towards success.” Ramaz Middle School Assistant Head of School, Rabbi Chaim Hagler added, “Tory is a leader with a magnetic personality. She has a real growth mindset both on and off the court. I’ve had quite a few one on one conversations with Tory. She is very receptive and reflective. She is a great hockey player who gets her teammates involved.”

Toby, congrats on the championship and on being recognized as this week’s Sportstar of the Week! Who is your role model and why?

My role model is my older sister, Lucy. She’s nice to everyone, incredibly smart and she has amazing style!

What is your favorite sport?

My favorite sport is hockey because everyone in my family plays, even my mom who played in college (she was a D1 goalie). I love the action.

What is your pregame routine?

I like listening to music with my teammates before games. It gets us excited and ready to play.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

Winning this year’s hockey championship is at the top of the list, while scoring the championship winning goal and having 4 goals and 2 assists overall. It’s amazing that our team is bringing home the first girls hockey championship at Ramaz.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

My favorite athlete is Adam Fox of the New York Rangers. He’s a Jewish athlete from New York and is one of the best players in the NHL.

What is your earliest sports memory?

My earliest sports memory is learning to ice skate with my mom when I was 2 years old.

What is your weirdest sports memory?

I think it’s funny that we had the fewest players in the league and were still able to win it all.

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?

I enjoy hanging out with my friends outside of sports.

What is your favorite sports memory?

My favorite sports memory is going to weekend tournaments with my ice hockey team. But my parents don’t believe in sports specialization, they are actually crazy about not focusing on one sport. So I have grown up playing a ton of different sports—ballet, gymnastics, swimming, tennis, floor hockey, ice hockey, basketball—I’m even on a competitive hip hop dance team.  And so my whole life is basically one giant sports memory.

What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?

The attention being given to girls’ sports. The best part of being on a girls’ team is becoming close to teammates in different grades and with different interests. Being part of a team creates an incredible bond.

The Humble Toast Sportstar of the week will receive a $25 gift card to The Humble Toast. Please send nominees for an upcoming The Humble Toast Jewish Link Sportstar of the Week to [email protected].
