The Humble Toast SportStar of the Week: Sam Nasar

The Jewish Link and The Humble Toast would like to recognize Sam Nasar as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. Sam is an eighth grader at the Hillel Yeshiva in Deal, New Jersey, president of the student council and one of the three players still on the roster from last year’s YMSSA eighth grade championship team working on another perfect season this year. When asked about Sam, Coach Jackie Ashkenazi told The Jewish Link, “Sam is what every coach wants in a player. He gives 100% effort in practice and in the game. He is respectful to his coaches and teammates and a great all around person. He is also a great player with an even better future.”

Sam, congrats on being recognized as this week’s Sportstar of the Week! Who is your role model and why?

My role model is my dad Ralph Nasar. He always puts all his effort in everything he does and he taught me how to play basketball.

Who is your favorite athlete?

Giannis Antetokounmpo is my favorite athlete because of his skillset and humble personality. He is 6’11” dominating the court with his athleticism and finesse around the rim. He also has a great work ethic and constantly works to improve his game.

What is your favorite sport?

My favorite sport is basketball, because I love to compete no matter how big and strong my opponents are.

What is your pregame routine?

Every time before a game I like to listen to music and work on my game or a new move before the game starts.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

My greatest sport’s accomplishment is when we won a championship for Hillel Yeshiva in the 2021-2022 season. I was fortunate enough to be one of three seventh graders playing for the eighth grade team.

What is your weirdest sports memory?

My weirdest sports memory is when I played on a DSN travel team with only five players. I fouled out and my team had to play a four-on-five.

What is your earliest sports memory?

My earliest sports memory was when I got a basketball hoop in my old Brooklyn house and my dad picked me up so I was able to dunk the ball and hang on the rim.

What is your favorite sports memory?

My favorite sports memory is when I scored my first point on the DSN travel team. I remember the crowd clapping and the big smile on my face when I scored and it’s something that I will remember forever.

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?

My favorite thing to do when I am not playing sports is to hang out with my friends and play NBA 2K with them.

What is the best thing about being a Sporstar?

The best thing about being a sportstar is when I am given trust by my teammates and coaches to start the game and hopefully give us a strong start of the game with the four other teammates I’m on the court with.

The Humble Toast Sportstar of the week will receive a $25 gift card to The Humble Toast. Please send nominees for an upcoming The Humble Toast Jewish Link Stars of the Week to [email protected].
