Heichal HaTorah Hosts Rabbi Dr. Ephraim Kanarfogel

This past week, participants of Heichal’s Research Fellowship Program had the privilege of hearing from Rabbi Dr. Ephraim Kanarfogel, the E. Billi Ivry professor of Jewish History, Literature and Law at the Bernard Revel Graduate School and at Stern College. Rabbi Kanarfogel, one of the leading scholars on Medieval Jewish History and Rabbinic Literature, discussed the availability of machzorim and siddurim in Medieval Ashkenaz through a historic and halachic lens. The students enjoyed Rabbi Kanarfogel’s approach to using primary texts concerning medieval liturgy to rebuild a composite picture of what medieval prayer looked like to contemporary eyes. Rabbi Kanarfogel’s lecture was part of a series of ongoing research workshops offered to students in the Research Fellowship Program, a two-year independent honors program that allows Heichal underclassmen to conduct and present deep research into a given topic. Heichal looks forward to continued nachas from these fellows as they embark on their two-year research journey.
