Linking Northern and Central NJ, Bronx, Manhattan, Westchester and CT

In preparation for Rosh Hashanah, JKHA middle school students participated in the year’s first Moadim L’STEAMcha interdisciplinary holiday program. Students first learned the halachot related to honey. They also explored the question, “Why is honey even kosher if it comes from a non-kosher animal?” Students then learned the science on how bees make honey. After engaging with the material in an academic context, the students had the opportunity for some hands-on fun and even made their very own flavor-infused honey to take home to enjoy at their Rosh Hashanah tables.

The Shofar Factory also paid a visit to the school in preparation for Rosh Hashanah. Fifth graders prepared for Rosh Hashanah by participating in a presentation where they learned all about the shofar, including the details of how a kosher shofar is made, the different types of horns used and what makes a shofar work. Students also thad the exciting hands-on experience of making their own shofar to bring home. The sound of students blowing their new shofars made for an inspiring and memorable day.
