West Orange Sixth Grader Bakes for Tzedaka

Dalia Hammerman, a sixth grader at the Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy in Livingston, is preparing to become a bat mitzvah and, like many girls her age, wanted to take on a meaningful mitzvah project to enhance this special time in her life. Dalia, who lives in West Orange with her family, chose to organize a bake sale as her bat mitzvah project, and started last week, with the intention of baking twice a month until April, the month of her birthday, with her bat mitzvah following soon after in May.

As a passionate baker who began getting more serious about her hobby during the COVID pandemic, Dalia is excitedly preparing for each sale she makes. She is offering chocolate chip cookies, sprinkle sugar cookies, chocolate/vanilla cupcakes and cupcake cones. The cost is $15 for one dozen and $27 for two dozen of any of these baked goods. Orders must be placed by the Tuesday before delivery; the next delivery dates will be September 22 , October 13 and October 27.

All proceeds are being donated to Leket Israel and lone soldiers in Israel. When asked why she chose to donate to these specific organizations and individuals, Dalia noted that she “wants to be a soldier” and that Leket Israel “helps people who are hungry.”

During Pesach, Dalia and her family will be going to Israel, to celebrate her bat mitzvah and, of course, to acknowledge her hard work on this bake sale.
