Heichal HaTorah Determines pH Levels

The sun came out just in time for Ben PThis past week, Heichal HaTorah’s ninth-grade biology class learned about using indicators to test the pH level of common household solutions. A wide and diverse array of colors was examined from the interaction of natural-plant-based pigments (anthocyanins) in red cabbage juice with various acids and bases in common substances. Students were able to make predictions and determine whether a substance was an acid or base based on the color changes in the indicator. They were then tasked with identifying approximate hydrogen ion concentrations and pH levels based on the color change resulting from the chemical reaction. This lab provided students with a better understanding of how acids and bases impact the human body and how two strong substances can be used to neutralize the effects of one another. The importance of maintaining a proper pH in the human body for various life functions became evident. It was an eye-opening and enjoyable day in the lab!
