In order to augment the seventh-grade history curriculum which is focusing on the formation of our nation’s government, the Shefa School seventh grade went on a class trip to Philadelphia on Wednesday, November 1. After studying the challenges of the Articles of Confederation, and the debates that accompanied the ultimate adoption of the Constitution of the United States, students were given the opportunity to explore Philadelphia where all this history took place. They enjoyed an informative and amusing walking tour entitled “Revolting Philadelphia” during which they learned about the hygiene, disease prevention and eating habits of 18th-century Philadelphians (yuck!), and then visited the National Constitution Center where they attended the inspiring “We the People” immersive production.
The students then had an opportunity to explore the museum’s exhibits and were able to experientially deepen their knowledge about the branches of government, the election process and the impact of slavery on the development of the Constitution. Some students also visited the U.S. Mint, learning about how the country coins, prints and distributes currency, and others visited the Liberty Bell, exploring the unique history of that iconic American symbol. The exciting trip culminated with a fun visit to the Museum of Illusions where students were astounded by tricks of the eye and a much needed dinner stop in Cherry. Hill, New Jersey where students and faculty enjoyed delicious Chinese food. The Shefa School is committed to providing multi-sensory and experiential learning opportunities for all students!
