Moshe Sedek is like many 16-year-olds. He’s a junior at the Frisch School, where he’s working out his post-high school plans, but what sets him apart is the fact that he’s also an accomplished singer who has performed across the tri-state area. Moshe has been singing his whole life, starting with karaoke performances at 3 years old, and is now taking his music to the next level by offering his voice at weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, kumzits, and other such events.
Talking to Moshe, his quiet humility is the first thing that jumps out. He casually lists events where he’s performed, and reflects that the most fulfilling part of what he does is seeing firsthand how his music impacts people’s days.
“It’s a great feeling; to be able to contribute something positive to special moments is humbling,” Moshe shared with The Jewish Link. “When I see smiles or feel the energy in the room change because of something I’ve sung, that’s when I realize the power of what I’m doing. I’m excited to hopefully make more memories as I perform at more events.”
When asked about his approach to singing at these events, Moshe emphasizes the importance of connecting with the audience emotionally. “It’s not just about hitting the notes, it’s about creating an atmosphere that resonates with people. Music is something that brings people together, so when I perform it’s not just about showcasing my vocals, it’s about creating a shared experience. I want people to not only hear the music but to feel it in their hearts.”
Doreen Sedek, Moshe’s mother, says that despite Moshe’s obvious talent there is one who deserves the credit. “It’s all from Hashem. Every time I hear him sing, it’s just the biggest blessing. And the greatest part is how he’s using music for good to serenade a chosson and kallah on the most importants days of their lives. It’s incredible, and we’re so unbelievably proud of him.”
When it comes to his influences, Moshe lists Eitan Katz and Ishay Ribo among his favorites. They shape not only his musical tastes, but also the sources of inspiration that he draws from when giving a performance.
“There’s a lot about Jewish music that’s different from secular music,” Moshe said. “For instance, there’s a spiritual depth in Jewish music that makes it special. Each word is important and carries meaning. It’s not about catchy tunes, it’s about conveying messages that resonate. That’s one of the many reasons that draws me to it, and is why I enjoy performing it so much.”
As for college plans, Moshe isn’t sure yet what he wants to study. For now, he’s focused on navigating his high school workload while singing for events as they come up. “I’m busy, but that’s good. I want to make the most of my time in high school, while continuing to really hone my craft. I plan to do music along with something else, and though I’m not sure yet what that will be, I’m excited to find out.”
For now, music has allowed Moshe to really come out of his shell. His mother says he used to be shy, but music has helped him blossom. “Seeing him on a stage full of confidence is just the greatest thing,” Doreen said. “Music has given him a voice in more ways than one, and it’s incredible to see how it’s shaped him into the confident and talented young man he is today.”
While Moshe is Sephardic, he was raised among the Ashkenazic community of Paramus, New Jersey. This has allowed him to dip into both cultures and traditions.
“As young as I am, I have experience in both worlds,” said the young performer. “I can cover a wide variety of Jewish music, and am happy to share it with everyone. For me, it’s never just been about singing; it’s about using music to connect people, and I think that’s really cool.”
