Last Sunday morning, David and Rena Schlussel hosted a NORPAC pro-Israel event for Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ) at their home in Teaneck. He is chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee tasked with oversight over the United Nations and former Chair of the Helsinki Commission.
During the event, Smith commented on the recent announcement by the Trump administration on moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem. He praised the administration’s approach to achieving a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and urging other regional leaders to embrace a path to peace. In 1998, Smith was a co-sponsor of the Foreign Affairs Reform and Restructuring Act—which passed Congress—that set aside funding of the construction of a U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem.
Smith also praised the recent passage of the House version of the Taylor Force Act, a bill that would cut off specific U.S. funding given to the Palestinian Authority that was used to pay the families of dead terrorists.
Chris Smith will be running for re-election for his 18th term in Congress in 2018.
