JESC Highlights Alumni

Fundraising Breakfast planned for April 21

Jewish Education for Special Children has been a model for other programs that have followed. In a three-hour framework on Sunday mornings, they provide classes for people with special needs in Tfillot, Hebrew language, the holidays, arts and crafts and, music, gym, dance and several exceptional programs during the year. These include shofar making, pressing olive oil for Chanukah, matzah baking, a magic show, and and caring for animals.

The children range in age from 3 years to their midtwenties and are grouped according to age and ability. Their “specialness” covers a broad spectrum and no one is turned away for lack of tuition. Neither is anyone turned away in regard to level of religious observance. Some of our children attend yeshivas, and many are in secular special needs programs. They are all a welcome and vibrant part of our community.

Under the wonderful guidance of director, Rabbi Yisroel Schwab, a team of dedicated teachers and assistants work hard to help the students. Many staff members started out as volunteers. There are high school girls and boys willing to wake up early on Sunday mornings and give their time to be with our students. They often stay on to become paid assistants and then teachers. Several of our staff have returned after having been to Israel and/or graduating college. They are all loving, patient, and giving people who experience joy with each success their students achieve.

However, as in all nonprofits, JESC can only march forward and be strong by raising funds from the community. Every year at the JESC breakfast, the organization  highlights some of those special people. This years, the guests of honor are Chani and Laurent Bensimon, and those assistants who are graduating high school, who help JESC succeed and provide the impetus to keep improving. Those who attend the breakfast are among the most honored guests, as their support allows the program to keep going and be available to every Jewish child.

In addition to the guests of honor, this year JESC is honoring and inviting back several JESC alumni to find out how they have progressed since graduating from the program. Everyone is excited to be seeing and hearing from them once again. Meir Boruch Levi, Baruch Lunzer, Tamar Schlanger and Avi Tsadok will all be there. If you know them, their siblings and their parents, please attend. If not, this is an opportunity to meet and learn about some exceptional individuals and how JESC was a part of their lives.

Please come and share this exciting and important event. Discover an extraordinary program that might be valuable to you and/or someone you know. The JESC theme states, “Every Jewish Child Deserves a Jewish Education.” Your support can be the key to keeping that a possibility.
